
Western Digital has released its Caviar family HDD based on the 320 GB-per-platter technology, the WD Caviar SE16 640 GB 3.5-inch hard drives. The WD Caviar SE16 SATA and EIDE drives are certified for Windows Vista and are top performers on the Windows Vista Experience Index. The latest generation of WD Caviar SE16 drives employs Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology to achieve even greater areal density. The Caviar Series features 300 MB/s transfer rate, 16MB cache, Native Command Queuing (NCQ), and cool operating temperatures and quiet operation, enabling customers to integrate WD products in the most demanding desktop and external storage environments. Its two-platter design promotes cool, quiet operation in a high-capacity drive. WD Caviar SE16 640 GB 3.5-inch hard drive can hold up to-160,000 songs (MP3), 16,000 songs (uncompressed CD quality), 49 hours of Digital Video (DV), 280 hours of DVD quality video and 77 hours of HD video.

Western Digital has announced the shipping of its latest Caviar family of 3.5-inch hard drives which is based on 320GB-per-platter technology. The Caviar Series features 300 MB/s transfer rate, 16MB cache, Native Command Queuing (NCQ), and cool operating temperatures and quiet operation, enabling customers to integrate WD products in the most demanding desktop and external storage environments.
“Our technology investments and product roadmap execution have resulted in WD shipping the industry’s highest areal densities in the industry’s two highest volume markets,” said Hossein Moghadam, chief technology officer of WD. “Our 250 gigabits-per-square-inch technology already has been reliably serving our 2.5-inch customers, and now it will benefit customers in the 3.5 inch desktop and other product areas.”
