Asus has launched a new optical drives that support 5x DVD-RW Double Layer, the ASUS DVD-E818A2 and ASUS DVD-E818A2T. Both comes with advanced built-in ASUS exclusive technologies that provides quieter, more stable and higher performance multimedia environment. The new industry format of 5x DVD-RW DL support will enable user to view high quality videos directly burnt into DVDs from camcorders and obtain fabulous playback capacities. The ASUS DVD-E818A2 and ASUS DVD-E818A2T are able to access CDs, DVD-ROM/DVD±R/ DVD±RW/DVD-RAM and DVD-Video discs. It also supports fast speed data transfer rate at max rates of 24930 KB/s (18x) for DVD-ROM, 7200 KB/s (48x) for CD-ROM. Access times are also shortened with fast random access times for DVD access at 105 ms versus typical 95 ms CD access times.

Yes, Compact Disc (CD) has been in our daily life for exactly 25 years since it’s introduced by Philips on August 17, 1982. Some people estimate over 200 Billion have been sold (looks like the golden arches had some competition after all). Besides storage capacity the big difference was the audio quality the jump from analog to digital created. Although its good brother DVD has been around for few years, and there are new comer HD-DVD and Blu-ray options, Compact Disc are still going to be used for data recording in the near future, well, might still be a long way to go.
